Hello!

I was doing a BIOS update to my computer but something went wrong and it never recovered. Here are the main symptoms:

  • I get a permanent blank screen, there's no backlight at all.
  • Also no image when I plug the laptop to an external screen.
  • Laptop starts, fans start, but screen remains blank.
  • When I remove the memory modules, the CAPS LOCK light blinks 3 times long, and 2 times short. As I read here, that means a memory problem, what makes sense because it's missing.
  • With memory modules installed, I get no beeps or lights at all (but the charging light).

I tried different possible solutions, to no avail:

  • Hard reset
  • Windows Key + B/V combinations didn't help
  • I tried to recover the BIOS with an USB, downloaded from HP Support for my laptop, but the laptop won't even boot to the USB, even when I had the USB configured as boot device before the SSD drive.
  • I tried the solution removing the CR2032 battery and putting it back after a couple minutes, but also didn't work.

I read a post here in the community support where someone reflashed the BIOS himself, but I don't have the means to do that. Even if did it, I'm not sure it would help, because I tend to think there's actually a problem with the motherboard.

Maybe someone has an idea or suggestion of what I could possibly try before I bin the laptop.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Cheers,

 Awlo.

Hello, @Sandytechy20!

Thank you for your quick reply. I tried the solutions in the HP document you pointed out:

  1. Resetting the embedded controller didn't help
  2. Resetting the CMOS also didn't help
  3. Recovering the BIOS also didn't help, but:
    • With Win+B, nothing happened: laptop started, but screen didn't turn on.
    • With Win+V, the laptop did restart once, but screen did never turn on.

In all 3 points, the screen never turned on, there's no backlight at all, what makes me think there's a problem with the motherboard or the graphic card.

During the 3 procedures, the laptop was attached to an external monitor through the HDMI port and there was no image here either.

Any other thing I could try?
