HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-dk0056wm
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello there,

Basically, I have indicated the issue my laptop is having but it is not solvable, sadly. I'm hoping there might be an alternative to reverting back to Windows 10.

Here's the problem: When I lower the display refresh rate to 40 Hz, the screen appears normal. However, at 60 Hz, the lower part of the screen goes black, and over time, the issue is creeping upward. After some research, I've realized that my 60 Hz screen refresh rate isn't synchronized, causing the flickering and blackouts. The solution is to download and install the latest "monitor" driver from HP's official website. The problem is, when I select my laptop category, there's no option for Windows 11, and even Windows 10 doesn't have my OS version (22H2), so I'd have to downgrade to Windows 10 20H2!

I still believe there might be an alternative way to obtain the necessary monitor driver version for my laptop to resolve the issue. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Eagerly awaiting your input.

Gladly,
Faizi

P.S: In case, the problem is not with the monitor's driver, feel free to let me know.

Hi @Faizi_,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop's screen is blacking out from the bottom and you are using a 60 Hz refresh rate, there could be several potential causes for this issue. Here are some steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the problem.

  • Check the Power Source: Ensure that your laptop is connected to a stable power source. Sometimes, if the laptop is running on battery power and the battery is low, it may not be able to provide sufficient power for the display.
  • Display Driver Update: Outdated or incompatible display drivers can cause display issues. Visit the HP support website and make sure you have the latest graphics drivers installed for your laptop model.
  • Refresh Rate: It's worth trying different refresh rates to see if the issue persists. If you are currently using a 60 Hz refresh rate, try changing it to 120 Hz or a different available option to see if the problem goes away.
  • Check for Overheating: Overheating can cause display problems. Make sure your laptop is adequately cooled. Clean out any dust from the vents and consider using a cooling pad if necessary.
  • Check for Malware or Software Conflicts: Malware or conflicting software can sometimes cause strange display issues. Run a full system scan with a reputable antivirus program and consider uninstalling any recently installed software or drivers that may be causing conflicts.
  • Hardware Check: If the problem persists after trying the above steps, there may be a hardware issue. The problem could be with the laptop's screen, GPU, or other internal components.
  • External Monitor Test: If you have an external monitor, connect your laptop to it and see if the issue occurs on the external display as well. If it does, it's more likely to be a laptop hardware or software issue. If the external monitor works fine, it could indicate a problem with the laptop's built-in display.
  • BIOS Update: Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop on the HP website. Sometimes, updating the BIOS can resolve hardware-related issues.
  • Reset Display Settings: In Windows, you can try resetting the display settings to their default values. Right-click on the desktop, select "Display settings," scroll down, and click on "Advanced display settings." Then, click on "Display adapter properties" and go to the "Monitor" tab. Click the "Monitor" dropdown menu and select the appropriate refresh rate.
  • Windows Update: Ensure that Windows is up to date with the latest updates and patches. Sometimes, software updates can fix display issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you for your response!

I've actually tried all the suggestions you mentioned. As I mentioned in my previous message, I have two available options for the "refresh rate" - 40 Hz and 60 Hz. When I use 40 Hz, the screen looks normal, but it's not suitable for gaming due to the lower frames per second. Unfortunately, using the 60 Hz refresh rate causes the black area to slowly expand upward of the screen over time.

Regarding the drivers, I visited the HP website, and it detected my system and the drivers I currently have. The problem is that there's no option to select Windows 11, and even Windows 10 OS version 22H2 isn't listed. I'm simply looking for an updated monitor driver for my system, which doesn't seem to be available on the website. I've attempted to update the drivers, but it says they are already up to date.

I hope this information helps, and I'm still seeking assistance to resolve the issue with the 60 Hz refresh rate on my monitor.

I appreciate the suggestion, but the main reason I came to the HP community to post my issue is because the link you provided didn't offer any assistance. All I'm encountering is "virtual" assistance, which unfortunately isn't helpful in my situation. There's no option for me to chat with a "human" support representative. I'm feeling disappointed and somewhat hopeless about resolving my problem.
