Hi @TrisW
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I'm really sorry your new Omen 16 is making strange and distracting sounds—it’s unsettling when everything else is working beautifully.
I can guide you through steps to help identify and reduce the noise.
Steps to Diagnose and Reduce Unusual Laptop Sounds
1. Identify the Type of Sound
Try to note whether the sound is:
- Mechanical (clicking, grinding, buzzing): often from fans or drives
- Electrical (whining, coil whine): may come from the GPU or power circuitry
- Speaker-related (pops, static): could be audio driver or app interference
If it’s intermittent, note whether it happens during:
- Gaming or high-performance tasks
- Charging or battery use
- Sleep or idle mode
2. Update BIOS and Drivers
Outdated firmware can cause fan control or power delivery issues.
- Visit the HP Omen 16 Drivers and Software page
- Download and install the latest BIOS, chipset, and graphics drivers
- Restart your laptop after installation
3. Adjust Performance Settings
- Open OMEN Gaming Hub
- Go to Performance Control
- Set Thermal Profile to Balanced or Quiet
- Disable Dynamic Power Mode if enabled
This can reduce fan ramp-up and electrical noise under light loads.
4. Check for Background Apps
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
- Look for apps using high CPU or GPU when idle
- Close unnecessary apps and observe if the sound stops
5. Run HP Diagnostics
- Open HP Support Assistant from the Start menu
- Select your device > Troubleshooting and Fixes > Component Tests
- Run Fan Test and System Test
Download if needed: HP Support Assistant
Let me know if you’d like help identifying the sound type or adjusting OMEN Gaming Hub settings. Once these steps are complete, your laptop should run more quietly and comfortably.
