Hi @82827

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

If your HP laptop isn't displaying anything but the fan is working, there are several troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Display Connections: Make sure that the display connection is not loose or damaged. If you are using an external monitor, ensure that the HDMI or VGA connections are secure.

  2. Restart the Laptop: Completely power off your laptop and turn it back on. This can sometimes resolve temporary issues preventing the display from turning on.

  3. External Monitor Test: Connect your laptop to an external monitor to check if the issue is with the laptop’s display. If the external monitor works, the problem might be with your laptop's screen or its connections.

  4. Brightness Settings: Adjust the brightness settings of your laptop to ensure it is not set too low, making the screen appear dark.

  5. Check for Overheating: If your laptop is unusually warm, it may have overheated, causing the display issues. Ensure that the laptop is placed on a hard, flat surface to allow ventilation and try letting it cool down.

  6. Boot in Safe Mode: If possible, try booting your laptop in Safe Mode. This will load basic drivers that might help in identifying if the issue is driver-related.

  7. Inspect Hardware: Sometimes, issues might arise due to faulty hardware components inside the laptop. If you're comfortable, you can check for any visible damage or loose cables.

  8. Perform a Hard Reset: Disconnect all peripherals and power cables, remove the battery (if applicable), and hold down the power button for about 15 seconds. Then reconnect everything and power the laptop on.

@82827, Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding the HP laptop.

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution. We hope our assistance has been helpful!

Could you please let us know the make and model of the laptop?

However, please perform a few troubleshooting steps which could help in resolving the issue.

  1. Check External Display:

    • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using an HDMI or VGA cable.
    • If the external display works, it may indicate an issue with your laptop's screen or its cables.
  2. Restart the Laptop:

    • Perform a hard reset by holding the power button down for about 10-15 seconds to turn off the laptop, and then turn it back on.
  3. Check for Loose Connections:

    • If you're comfortable doing so, check the physical connection between the display and the motherboard. Ensure all cables are securely connected.
  4. Check for Brightness Settings:

    • Sometimes, the brightness might be turned down. Increase the brightness using the keyboard shortcuts (usually involves the "Fn" key and a function key with a sun icon).
  5. Battery and Power Supply:

    • Remove any connected peripherals and the battery (if removable), and then connect only the power adapter to ensure it's not a battery issue.
  6. Perform a BIOS Recovery:

    • If applicable, try to recover the BIOS by pressing the relevant key combination (usually pressing the "F2" key repeatedly immediately after turning on the laptop) to access the BIOS settings and reset defaults.
  7. Check CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK:

    • Press the CAPS LOCK or NUM LOCK key to check if the indicator light turns on. This helps determine if the system is responding even though the display isn't working.

I hope this helps!

Take care and have an amazing day!
