Hi I have a HP Pavilion Laptop model dk0055wm and it suddenly just wont show anything on the screen. I can hear the fans running and the power button is lit up but the screen is just black. The only error codes im getting is from the shift key blinking 3 times slow and 2 times fast. This keeps repeating over and over. I've already tried doing a bios reset (win+b) or (win+v) still no response and its giving the same error code. I would appreciate if anyone could me figure this out. (probably need to change ram, but need expert confirmation)

Hi @Don6032
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
Thanks for explaining everything so clearly—I’m really sorry you’re facing a black screen with blinking shift key codes. You’ve already done a great job trying BIOS recovery methods, and the fact that the fans and power light are active helps narrow this down.
Let’s walk through a focused diagnosis to confirm whether this is a memory-related fault or something else.
What the blinking shift key means
The 3 slow blinks followed by 2 fast blinks typically indicate a memory (RAM) failure. This pattern is part of HP’s hardware-level blink code system used when the display cannot initialize. Since BIOS recovery didn’t respond and the screen remains black, RAM is the most likely cause.
Step-by-step actions to confirm and resolve
1. Perform a full power reset
- Disconnect the power adapter
- If the battery is removable, take it out
- Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds
- Reconnect power and try turning it on again
- Observe if the blink pattern changes
2. Reseat or replace the RAM module
- Power off and unplug the laptop
- Open the bottom panel (if accessible)
- Locate the RAM module(s)
- Remove and reinsert each module carefully
- If you have two modules, try booting with one at a time
- If available, test with a known-good compatible RAM stick
3. Test with external monitor
- Connect the laptop to an external display via HDMI
- Power on and check for output
- If the external screen remains black, the issue is deeper than display initialization
4. Confirm model-specific RAM specs
Your HP Pavilion dk0055wm typically uses DDR4-2400 or DDR4-2666 SODIMM
- Maximum supported memory: 16 GB
- If replacing, use a single stick of 4 GB or 8 GB for testing
5. Use HP’s startup troubleshooting guide
