Before purchasing the M.2 it is best to make sure there is a slot available???
We have found that if the laptop was not purchased with an M.2 ,the slot could be missing???

I already have both a 1tb and a 2tb Evo 970 m2 in my PC, I was thinking about lifting the 1tb out of it and putting it in laptop.
Page 44 of the manual you posted has the part number for the nvme etc so that's great.. hoping that the 1tb is supported as all I see in the list is up to 512gb
Thanks for your help and direct link to manual.. perfect.

When you look at an HP manual you have to keep in mind what is listed is what HP tested for sale.
It is not the limit of the hardware.
Since you have an 8th Gen CPU and DDR4 memory your hardware max memory should be 64GB.

Laptop arrived today..
Pleasantly surprised to find the 128gb SSD mentioned in the spec is actually already a nvme M2, all be it not a very fast one (3x the speed of a regular SSD but about 50% the speed of the Evo 970) - think i'll stick with it for the time being.
My main concern right now is display bleed. The top right and bottom right corner are VERY bright compared to the rest of the screen (washed out almost) - i've known this to happen with old laptops etc but this bad after only a few hours use?
Need to investigate if this warrants a return/replacement or not. Also not sure if Curry's will simply tell me to contact HP
