OMEN by HP Laptop 17-an0xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello experts 🙂

My laptop is 3 years old. The old battery lasted only 30 min when I replaced it four weeks ago. With the new battery it worked great for a couple of weeks. I had more than 3 hours of battery time. After  3 weeks the battery suddenly  stopped charging..

I have run diagnostics (no problem according to that) and upgraded bios, built in programs etc. (the newer files I could find in the list of drivers that appeared relavant).

Still no luck.

The computer is still fast enough and  works fine apart from that, but I cannot move it without closing it and of course it looses bios settings every night.

I started looking for a new computer but with this kind of problems I do not dare to buy a new HP Omen. I have used HP laptops at work and I even have a 10 year old HP laptop that still has 1-2 hours battery time left although I have treated the poor thing really badly. I am really dissappointed at this Omen. Batteries can be replaced but when that does not help....?? Ideas?

Hello @Tiili

Ya, when ever I see someone say their 10 year old PC still has the same battery I am reluctant to answer because that person usually refuses to agree.

But 3 years for these newer (not 10 yr-old) GAMING laptop batteries is typical. Those systems are hard on batteries and this happens for that newer style of "lithium" interior mounted battery, even for other brands, not just HP.

Since HP does not resell those original batteries, we have to look to alternative options. If a 3rd party replacement did not last more than 3 weeks, that's on its manufacturer.

  1. In some rare case if your power board inside failed or the charger quit, it would not allow charging.
  2. You could try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery from the Device manager and reboot. Sometimes it helps.
  3. You could also boot into a USB bootable Linux drive like Linux Mint and see if the battery charges there. If it does, then you  know its an issue in windows.

I also always advise users to game while plugged in also. This helps to lengthen the batteries end of life cycle.
