Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

So, for about a week now, my HP Omen 16 has been having issues starting up and staying on. When it does turn on, sometimes it randomly shuts off, no overheating or anything, and doesn’t turn back on. The power light will stay active for a second and then turn back off, and sometimes blinks, and this happens no matter how many times you press the power button (the charge light is on when plugged up). There’s no pattern, it’s random.

I have opened the laptop up several times and confirmed connections to the battery and screen, and even recently swapped the ram slots. This didn’t help and it didn’t turn on.

I do have the windows insider program for Windows 11, and if it’s a software issue, that could be the problem, but I’m starting to doubt it by this point, since I reinstalled the whole system and it didn’t fix it.

Originally, I thought it was a BIOS issue, as the first time it happened, it turned back on after opening it up and did an update, but that hasn’t happened again.

The laptop itself isn’t necessarily old, was bought in 2022, though hasn’t been used since this year. For the first few months I had it, it worked great, no crashes, no errors. It’s only in this last week that’s it been doing this. The warranty on it has expired.

Update, accidentally resolved:

Apparently the issue was caused by the most obvious thing ever: my SSD. I didn’t really it was that since I had taken it out it and put it back in and replaced it all that good stuff. So, after trying all the other stuff and reseating the RAM, I decided to hold the SSD card in its slot and hold the power button. And, lord and behold, it booted up. That’s why smacking the thing seemed to work sometimes, it forced the card into place. The urge to slap myself in the face is overwhelming.

If any of you have the same issue please try that, especially with cards that have been added on. Make sure it’s in the slot properly ✌️

Use an air duster to clean the motherboard.  Then remove the memory sticks and inspect for corrosion.  Dust the memory socket and wipe the contacts of the memory sticks.  Be sure to blow out the dust off the motherboad and power supply before removing the memory sticks.

Interior cleaning a PC

Before touching any component inside a PC you should touch the metal case first to allow any static electric to discharge.
If you do not have the proper surface for working on electronic equipment, then use an anti-static spray around the work area.

I had actually done this a little bit ago; I had cleaned out my fans and gotten the rest of the motherboard while I was at it. I always make sure to discharge static electricity before touching any components in the device. Cleaning it didn’t seem to have gotten anywhere and none of my hardware has any noticeable corrosion.

I had also figured out that the hall sensor (tells whether the lid is closed) on these laptops tends to malfunction after a bit due to the ribbon being too close to the heat sync, so I carefully took tweezers and removed it, and that didn’t seem to help either. I have also tried all key combinations and a second monitor. It’s entirely unresponsive to anything I do.
