My laptop was working absolutely fine yesterday however today I come to power the system on and it is unresponsive. I press the power button but the button does not light up nor does the system start to boot or the display turn on. It also starts to get very hot.

I have tried power cycling and tried plugged in and unplugged from the mains but it is the same thing every time. It has never been running this hot even when in use for gaming. System is less than 12 months old.

Hi @TheManxViking,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This is a serious hardware fault, and the symptoms you described are critical:

  • No power-up response (power button doesn’t light, display stays off).
  • Laptop gets very hot even when not booting → indicates a short circuit or power delivery failure.
  • Power cycling and AC/battery tests didn’t help.
  • Less than 12 months old → still under warranty.

What This Means

The system is likely experiencing:

  • Motherboard failure (power rail short or VRM fault).
  • Faulty power IC or charging circuit.
  • Thermal runaway because fans never start (explains overheating without boot).

This is not a software issue since the laptop doesn’t even reach BIOS; reinstalling the OS or drivers won’t help.

Immediate Actions

  1. Unplug the charger and remove any external devices immediately to prevent further damage.
  2. Do NOT keep trying to power it on—the heat can damage the CPU/GPU permanently.
  3. Contact HP Support for warranty repair ASAP

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
