Omen Laptop 15-ax236TX

Hi Guys,

any advise would be appreciated.

Problem:

When under medium to high stress loads (i.e. when playing any game) the frame rate will drop to 1-7fps from a stable 35-135fps dependent on what game it is. During such times no background applications are running whatsoever. This will happen sporadically occurring in intervals once every two or three minutes to two or three times a minute for a 5-30 second period.

The battery is consistently at 8% when running on the power supply so not sure if the battery needs changing or this reading is related to the problem.

These games had previously run without any issues.

HP Omen Notebook Specs

CPU: Inter i7-7700HQ

GPU: GeForce GTX 1050

RAM: 16GB DDR 4

PSU: OEM 150W

C: Drive: (Win 10 drive) 120GB SSD (64.7GB free) - upgraded from the 8 Gig factory standard instal.

😧 Drive: (Games drive) 1T SSD (724GB free). Upgraded from the factory standard instal.

PC Age: Just over 3 years old

Debugging Measures Taken:

- Change in game settings

- Removal of external hardware (mouse, keyboard, etc.)

- Alterations to battery performance

- Driver updates

- SSD and HHD hardware diagnostics scans (No errors found)

- Memory diagnostics scans (No errors found)

- Alterations to settings in NVIDIA Control Panel

- Cleanup of unnecessary programs and other things which may take up room on the drives which are not nearly at full capacity anyway

- Use of 'Open Hardware Monitor' to check what happens to the hardware on occurrence: Thermals are fine, CPU &/ OR GPU is nearly maxed then settles down to 85% or there about, nothing else out of the ordinary)

- Re-installation of Windows 10 and all programs

- HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Tool (Did not find any errors)

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

Since you have already reinstalled Windows, I suggest you download and run the HP Support Assistant from this Link: https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/hpsupportassistant/hpsupport.html?jumpid=va_r602_us/en/any/psg/p...

HPSA will automatically search for all the latest drivers for your Notebook

  1. Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.

Click Updates in the My notebook pane

  2. Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.

Updates list in HP Support Center

  3. Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.

  4. Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.

  5. Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.

Also ensure Windows is up to date.

Select the Start  button, and then go to Settings  > Update & security  > Windows Update , and select Check for updates. If Windows Update says your device is up to date, you have all the updates that are currently available

Keep me posted how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Thank Krazy Toad for your reply.

Unfortunately all of your recommendations have been tested and don't resolve the problem.

Any more suggestion would be welcomed.

Thank you for posting back.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,  I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:

Right-click your desktop background and select NVIDIA Control Panel. You can also find this tool by performing a Start menu (or Start screen) search for NVIDIA Control Panel or by right-clicking the NVIDIA icon in your system tray and selecting Open NVIDIA Control Panel.

To quickly set a system-wide preference, you could use the Adjust image settings with the preview option. For example, if you have old hardware that struggles to play the games you want to play, you may want to select “Use my preference emphasizing” and move the slider all the way to “Performance.” This trades graphics quality for an increased frame rate.

By default, the “Use the advanced 3D image settings” option is selected. You can select Manage 3D settings and change advanced settings for all programs on your computer or just for specific games. NVIDIA keeps a database of the optimal settings for various games, but you’re free to tweak individual settings here. Just mouse-over an option for an explanation of what it does.

If you have a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus technology — that is, both NVIDIA and Intel graphics — this is the same place you can choose which applications will use the NVIDIA hardware and which will use the Intel hardware.
