OMEN Laptop - 15-dh1016nt
Microsoft Windows 11

It says M2x4.5 on the heat sink itself but in the maintenance and service guide for this laptop, it says "Remove the six Phillips M2.0 × 4.0 screws (4) in the order indicated on the heat sink.". I need to replace one of those screws. Although I've found one set in another country, it literally wants 5 times the price of the part for shipping. Couldn't find any M2x4.5 screws in my country. Why is there a difference in the guide and would M2x4 also be compatible with the heat sink. I don't want to take risk but I also have to replace the screw. What can you suggest. (Also couldn't connect to the live support due to expired warranty)

@kafkasoid, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

You're absolutely right to be cautious when replacing heat sink screws, as using the wrong size can affect thermal performance or even damage the motherboard.

Yes, M2 × 4.0 mm screws are generally safe to use in place of M2 × 4.5 mm for heat sinks as long as they securely fasten the sink without bottoming out or being too short. The 0.5 mm difference is minimal and usually doesn't affect the clamping force significantly.

However, here are a few tips:

  1. Test Fit: Gently screw in the M2 × 4.0 mm and check if it holds the heat sink firmly.
  2. Avoid Over-tightening: Especially with shorter screws, over-tightening can strip the threads or damage the board.
  3. Thermal Paste: If you've removed the heat sink, make sure to clean and reapply thermal paste before reinstallation.

We suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
