Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Omen laptop 15-5210nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

So while I was idling, my laptop went off.  It was glowing blue under the keyboard and power, no matter what I do, I can't wake it.  So I press and hold down the power button for like 10 sec or longer until it stopped the flashing.  But then, when I press power to turn on, it is glowing red under the keyboard and power button, continously flashing red every 4-5 seconds or so.

What does it mean?  What should I do?

Thanks.

Richard

@rji,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that the computer is not booting to Windows.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • Are you getting any display?
  • Are you getting any error message on the screen?
  • Is the caps lock light flashing on the keyboard?
  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?

While you respond to that, I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

1.    Turn off the computer.
2.    Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station.
3.    Disconnect all external connected peripheral devices, such as USB storage devices, external displays, and printers.
4.    Unplug the AC adapter from the computer.
5.    Remove the battery from the battery compartment.
6.    Press and hold the Power button for about 15 seconds to drain residual electrical charge from the capacitors that protect the memory.
7.    Insert the battery and plug the AC adapter back into the notebook, but do not connect any of the peripheral devices.
8.    Press the Power button to turn on the computer.
9.    On the Options screen, select Continue and continue to Windows 10.
10.    If a startup menu opens, use the arrow keys to select Start Windows Normally, then press the Enter key.
11.    Reconnect each of the peripheral devices.

Let me know how it goes. Awaiting your reply!

Hi.

  • I am not getting any display at all.  The screen remains black while the flashing of red is going on.  No HP logo, nothing.
  • I am not getting any messages on screen.  And no audible beeps either.  Just flashing of the red.
  • Caps lock is not flashing, but the whole keyboard as well as the two speakers on either side are flashing red.
  • There was a Windows 10 update (1803 I believe) that required a restart.  Upon restart, I got an error about maybe BIOS and/or UEFI error, can't remember exactly, press F1 to continue whatever.  I reboot it and Windows 10 came up fine.  I can use it.  But then it when off.  I thought it went into sleep mode at first.
  • I did do much troubleshoot except try to power off and power on again.  Long press power button like for 30 sec is what I did.
  • I will try your suggestions removing battery to see if it helps.

Hi,

I followed your steps and it's still the same.  As soon as I press the power botton, the button and the whole backlight starts to flash red.  One flash every 4-5 secs or so.

Thanks.
