When even a small amount of cores onto a task in the omen laptop, it freezes up without any warning, forcing me to restart the laptop. I am forced to use a single core (two threads) to prevent it from freezing, and even then it does freeze without warning (typically after 30 minutes). During this freeze I am unable to move my mouse or any other actions.
Typically when running with 5 threads the computer will start to heat up to around 90 C, then crash within 5-10 minutes. I've updated all drivers and windows but continue to have this problem. I've just got this laptop two days ago. It was working fine the first day but has crashed at least 8-10 times today.

Hello @joe822
Considering is brand new... I would either take it back to Walmart for an exchange asap, or contact HP Support for warranty issues.
Contact HP Worldwide | HP® Official Site
IF you do a warranty issue and they require you to send it in or if you return it, reinstall the OS with a factory reset... F11.
It will wipe your personal data if you have any, and you can test to see if it fixes the issue.

Hi,
Thanks for your help. I disabled turbo boost through power settings and now it works just fine. However, the processor is slowed by 2x speeds which is logical of course. Is there a way to not disable turbo boost but instead lower the maximum turbo boost? I'm an absolute beginner with computers but even running a single core it seems to dedicate the maximum turbo boost (if that makes sense) causing it to freeze up eventually.

To clarify, I'd still like to use a portion of the max 4.1 GHz proccessor speed, but not all of it since the computer would then crash. However, even using all 6 cores (6 threads) the computer is fine at sub 60C temperatures, so disabling turbo boost is a good temporary solution.
