I Just bought an omen max 16" RTX 5080.  All is good, but I notice that whenever it switches from the integrated GPU to the RTX it freezes the system for 5 - 10 seconds.

Annoyed with this i updated all the drivers, reinstalled the GPU drivers. Same thing happened.

I set the RTX as default GPU thinking this would sort this issue out, except now the freeze happens at login where it switches from GPU to RTX,but this time the freeze can last 20 second, it black screens me and then pops back allowing me normal use and login.

Is this a hardware issue?

Hi @Regulator_OG,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I truly understand how frustrating it must be to experience system freezes on a brand-new OMEN MAX 16" with RTX 5080. You’ve invested in a powerful machine, and it should deliver smooth performance without hiccups like this.

What’s Happening?

The freeze during GPU switching (from integrated to RTX 5080) is likely related to power management and driver coordination. This is not necessarily a hardware fault, but rather a configuration or optimization issue that can be addressed.

HP Recommended Steps to Fix GPU Switching Freezes

HP has published a detailed guide for optimizing your OMEN MAX 16 with RTX 5080. Here’s what you can do:

  1. Use OMEN Gaming Hub:
    • Switch to Unleashed Mode under Performance Control.
    • This allows manual tuning of CPU/GPU power limits.

  2. Adjust Power Settings:
    • For RTX 5080:
      • PL1: ≤ 130 W
      • PL2: ≤ 160 W
      • PL4: ≤ 240 W
      • IccMax: ≤ 263 A
    • Disable Smart Performance Gain if you’re seeing instability.

  3. Thermal Settings:
    • Set Max Fan to avoid thermal throttling.
    • Keep the battery charged above 90% to enable Hybrid Power.

  4. Reduce Background Load:
    • Close unnecessary apps using OMEN Gaming Hub’s Booster feature.
    • Disconnect unused peripherals to reduce power draw.

  5. Update Everything:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
