Hi everyone,

for some reason I cannot add the product (HP Pavilion Gaming 15) and the OS (Windows 10).

Anyway, I no longer have the original AC adapter for my laptop, and I have since bought replacement ones to replace it with matching specifications (19,5V 7,7A, 150W). The first one had detected throttling issues, after which I have decided to buy an HP one, which despite being slimmer, had the same power specs as the original. It did not solve the issue either, so I have sent the latter one back.

The throttling issue manifest mainly in the CPU core clocks barely exceeding 800MHz, when normally they are around 4GHz. Not a huge load for the CPU is required for the throttling issue to severely hamper performance.

I set my mind on finding the right AC adapter, but contacting the local HP support team wasn’t successful, as I was told that there are no matching chargers for sale.

since the HP hardware diagnostics on bios startup had passed the ac adapter tests instantly, altering power levels via the control panel and third-party software didn’t resolve the issue in any way, what would be the next step? Are there other parameters that are meant to match than power, voltage and amperage levels when buying the AC adapter? Would those be available in countries other than Poland with international shipping? Everyday usage is suffering from this, not to mention any potential heavier loads.

Thanks a lot in advance

Hi @Klamka

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating situation! Here are some insights and suggestions to help you tackle the throttling issue and find the right AC adapter for your HP Pavilion Gaming 15:

Matching Specifications: While power, voltage, and amperage are crucial, there are additional factors to consider:

  • Connector Type: Ensure the adapter has the correct connector size (e.g., 4.5mm x 3.0mm blue tip) to fit your laptop.
  • Original Manufacturer: Genuine HP adapters are often optimized for specific models, so it's worth verifying compatibility with your exact laptop model.
  • Power Delivery Standards: Some adapters may have different power delivery protocols, which could affect performance.

Throttling Issue:

  • The throttling could be caused by the adapter not delivering consistent power or by a deeper issue with the laptop's power management system.
  • Check if the BIOS settings have any power-related options that might help. Updating or resetting the BIOS could also be worth trying.

Alternative Solutions:

  • If finding the exact adapter proves difficult, consider using a universal laptop charger with adjustable voltage and amperage settings. Just ensure it meets your laptop's requirements.
