I have a HP Omen purchased a couple of months ago and find it has been very poor for wireless connectivity.

I still have my previous Dell laptop here and can have the two machines running simultaneously next to each other with the Dell on the wifi with a good signal and the Omen either a poor signal or none at all (it varies between the two of these). It's generally worse when my partner also has her own laptop running, and we of course have other devices like phones/TVs on the wi fi, nothing struggles to get a signal like the Omen does. It's more stable if I move the laptop closer to the router, but that's not a permanent solution, and we don't have that big a house. We've also even changed our router to a brand new one since becoming aware of this issue, and that has not really helped.

I've tried the HP Support assistant network checks and when there is a signal, it reports no issues (though I notice signal strength can be seemingly quite low - say 25% - 50%) - when there's no signal, the check just doesn't complete so it doesn't tell me anything!

Has anyone got any ideas what the problem might be/what might fix it? Perhaps HPs generally are a poorer spec in this area than Dell, even though that laptop is about 8 years old? The Omen so unreliable as to be almost unusable, and if I can't sort this I'll have to move on to something else.

Many thanks,

Bas991

Hi @bas991,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  • Does the issue occur on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, or just one of them?
  • When the signal drops, do you see the network disappear completely, or does it stay visible but fail to connect?
  • Have you noticed if the problem is worse when running on battery power vs. plugged in?

Troubleshooting Steps to Try

  • Update Wireless Drivers:
Visit HP Support Assistant or the HP Drivers page for your exact OMEN model and install the latest Wi‑Fi drivers. Sometimes Windows Update doesn’t provide the most stable version.
  • Forget and Reconnect Network:
In Windows settings, “Forget” your home Wi‑Fi network, then reconnect and re‑enter the password. This clears cached connection issues.
  • Check Power Management Settings:
Go to Device Manager → Network Adapters →  Wi‑Fi card → Properties → Power Management. Uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.” This prevents the adapter from sleeping.
  • Adjust Advanced Adapter Settings:
In the same properties window, under Advanced, look for options like “Roaming Aggressiveness” or “Preferred Band.” Setting roaming to Medium and preferring 5 GHz can sometimes stabilize connections.
  • Run Network Reset:
In Windows Settings → Network & Internet → Advanced Network Settings → Network Reset. This reinstalls all adapters and resets configurations.

I hope this helps.
