OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck1000 (509W4AV)

This is in response to:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Gaming-Notebooks/Which-one-to-replace-the-thermal-paste-for-OMEN-by-HP...

I wasn't able to reply directly? Not sure why... Hoping NinjaPuppy sees this, and maybe can helps others too.

@NinjaPuppy I also have the OMEN 17.3 inch Gaming Laptop PC 17-ck1000 (slightly different model: 509W4AV), and I recently went through this headache myself...

UPDATE: 16th September 2025 (as the original post ended up not working).

I only noticed this once I took the laptop to a friends house (off it's laptop cooling pad which must of been helping). Once I was using it at my friend's house, I realised that the original thermal paste upgrade wasn't working. Original post is left at the bottom.

So my first attempt at cooling this beast of a machine didn't work....

After Googling which thermal paste etc is best, without turning to liquid metal as I'm not comfortable applying that as it's too dangerous, corrosive, and messy (and I've watched too many repair videos where the cause of the issue was liquid metal!) - I opted for Thermal Grizzly Kryosheets. Extremely thin sheets of graphene so its still conductive, but its solid and easy to apply.

38x38mm for the i9-12900H CPU (which needed to be cut down (very carefully)

29x25mm for the 3080 Ti GPU.

A reference guide:

So... I had issues !

First attempt, I decided to clean off the Noctua NT-H2 thermal paste, leaving the Thermal Grizzly Minus Pad 8 on the power regulators and VRAM - BIG MISTAKE !!!!

NOTE: Do not leave the pads on when applying Kryosheets

My GPU temps were fine until I loaded a game which used the Nvidia GPU then temps shot straight to 140 degrees, before shutting off the laptop.

ShR33k1_1-1758058872649.jpeg

And the OMEN software couldn't detect any GPU temperature

ShR33k1_2-1758059049853.jpeg

Panicking... I thought I had just destroyed my laptop and killed the GPU !

It was resolved by allowing to cool down, and once I was able to reboot into Windows, I noticed the Nvidia App software wasn't loading, so I downloaded the Nvidia drivers again and performed a clean install.  After a reboot, and a scan within Device Manager, my GPU was working again! PHEW!!!

I was on the verge of removing the Kryosheets altogether thinking they were over hyped rubbish!

However... once I took it a part (again), I carefully lifted the heatsink and realised that the GPU's Kryosheet hadn't made contact, as the Grizzly thermal pad was 2mm in thickness, and was stopping the Kryosheet which is only 0.02mm thickness from making contact. The CPU had somehow made contact and wasn't causing any/much issue. Once I realised this, I removed the pads, and replaced the pads on the VRAM/power regulators with the Noctua thermal paste I had, and tried again with the Kryosheets.

SUCCESS !!!!

Even off my cooling pad, I'm getting much much lower temps. My FPS is up, and I'm actually getting reasonable FPS now, without the thermal throttling.  If anything changes, I'll post an update. Otherwise consider this done! For a very thin sheet of graphene - it certainly works wonders! Kryosheets are thin and easily destroyed if not handled with care. But if you can use this, its definitely worth it. I believe the thermal conductivity is similar to liquid metal. Just make sure you don't make the silly mistake I did and have thermal pads preventing a good tight fit.

Just remember its still conductive, so disconnect power adapter and battery!!!

Because the system has no power, it clears the CMOS/BIOS - so when you switch on again it takes a couple of minutes... so don't panic about the black screen - as long as you've done everything carefully and correct, you should be good!

I would recommend making a note somewhere, maybe the bottom of the case with a sticker to remind you that conductive CPU/GPU sheets have been installed to remind yourself to disconnect the battery before tempering in the future!

I've also adjusted the OMEN Gaming Hub to be on "Performance", fan speed set to "Auto", to help when gaming.

Original post, 4th September 2025.

I installed HWMonitor and I also loaded up OMEN Gaming Hub (which I never use), and on the OMEN Gaming Hub, I deliberately decided to set fans on max and the profile as "Performance".

And I instantly got an error:

ShR33k1_3-1756994354905.png

And HWMonitor was also highlighting an over heating issue

ShR33k1_4-1756994455029.png

To be fair on HP - their OMEN Gaming Hub gave me great info.

At idle (nothing loaded, just sat in Windows)

ShR33k1_5-1756994528777.png

I was hitting 93 degrees!!!

First thing I did was disconnect the battery!!! If there is liquid metal, it wasn't going to cause a short if the power supply and battery was disconnected.

Luckily, inside there was NO liquid metal thankfully! (Well done HP - and I honestly mean that!!!!)

ShR33k1_6-1756994601360.png

I cleaned all the old stuff away (very carefully with cotton tips aka cotton buds), and an old toothbrush being gentle as there are tiny near invisible components all around. Also cleaning the white thermal grease which was slightly harder to remove.

Once cleaned:

I then proceeded putting Thermal Grizzly pads Minus Pad 8 (120 x 20 x1.0 mm) on the power/VRAM regulators, and Noctua NT-H2 thermal paste on the GPU and CPU.

The Thermal Grizzly pads are expensive, but one pack is just enough for the machine if you cut them correctly.

I did put a little too much thermal paste on!

ShR33k1_8-1756994943883.png

But temps have now dropped from 93 idle, to 65 degrees idle

ShR33k1_9-1756994983137.png

And 75 degrees under load with a game running.

ShR33k1_10-1756995012428.png

Of course while I was inside the machine, I carefully cleaned the fans and vents too.

My normal OMEN Gaming Hub settings are "Balanced" and fan speed "Auto" which I have since reverted back too.

Hope you got sorted as its been a few months since your post, but just be very careful opening the machine up on the off-chance your model variation has liquid metal. You don't want that going everywhere! And unplug that battery first!!!

Good luck!
