Hi @AjaxOA

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry this is happening—especially on a gaming laptop that should deliver smooth, immersive experiences. You’ve done everything right by trying to troubleshoot, and I completely understand how frustrating it feels when the system locks up mid-game.

Your OMEN 16-xd0000 laptop flashing lights and freezing during gaming likely stems from GPU driver instability, thermal throttling, or BIOS/power management conflicts. Let’s walk through a focused recovery path to restore stable performance.

Step-by-step actions to stop flashing and freezing during gaming

1. Perform a full embedded controller reset

This clears low-level power states and resets thermal/power sensors.

  1. Power off the laptop completely.
  2. Disconnect the charger and all peripherals.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the charger only.
  5. Power on the laptop and test.

This helps reset the keyboard lighting controller and display power rail.

2. Update BIOS and OMEN Gaming Hub

These updates improve thermal management, lighting control, and system stability.

3. Clean install GPU drivers

Even if drivers are up to date, a clean install ensures no conflicts remain.

  1. Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) from https://www.wagnardsoft.com.
  2. Boot into Safe Mode.
  3. Run DDU and remove all NVIDIA or AMD drivers.
  4. Restart and install the latest GPU driver from:

This removes corrupted driver remnants that may trigger display shutdowns.

4. Adjust OMEN Gaming Hub performance settings

  1. Open OMEN Gaming Hub.
  2. Go to Performance Control.
  3. Set Thermal Control to Default or Cool.
  4. Disable Smart Sense if enabled.

This prevents aggressive fan or power shifts that may cause instability.

5. Monitor thermals and power events

  • Press Win + X > Event Viewer.
  • Go to Windows Logs > System.
  • Look for Event ID 41 (Kernel-Power) or Display driver crash logs.

These entries help confirm whether the system is overheating or the GPU is failing to recover.

Let me know how the laptop responds after these steps. If the issue persists, we can test with a clean boot or isolate the lighting controller further. You’ve done everything right by staying persistent—I’ll be here to guide you further if needed.
