OMEN 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-b1000
My laptop was purchased Feb 2023. Lately it’s been getting very laggy on games (even basic ones) but this has now spread to the whole system. It’s just laggy with opening any apps, typing etc.
Plenty of RAM, drivers have been upgraded, files cleared with the OMEN Gaming Hub, HP diagnostics run for a slow laptop and all checks out.
I’m at a loss as to what the problem is. Any ideas?

Hi @EarlyModern90,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP Omen gaming laptop is experiencing lag across the entire system, there could be several underlying issues. Here are some troubleshooting steps to consider.
- Check Background Processes: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) and check for any background processes using excessive CPU or memory. If you find any, consider ending those tasks or uninstalling unnecessary applications.
- Malware Scan: Run a full malware scan using Windows Defender or a reputable third-party antivirus program to rule out any malware infections that could be causing performance issues.
- Hard Drive Health: If you have an HDD, consider checking its health using tools like CrystalDiskInfo. If it's failing, it can lead to significant performance issues. SSDs can also slow down if they are nearly full, so ensure you have adequate free space (at least 10-20%).
- Windows Updates: Ensure that your Windows operating system is fully updated. Sometimes, pending updates can cause performance issues.
- Power Settings: Check your power settings. Ensure you are using a High Performance power plan, which can help with performance.
- Thermal Throttling: Overheating can cause the system to throttle performance. Ensure that the cooling vents are clean and that the fans are functioning properly. You can also use software like HWMonitor to check your CPU and GPU temperatures.
- Reinstall Drivers: Although you mentioned drivers have been upgraded, consider doing a clean reinstall of your graphics drivers. You can use the Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to remove existing drivers before installing the latest version from the manufacturer’s website.
- System Restore: If the lag started recently, consider performing a system restore to a point when the laptop was performing well.
- Check RAM Usage: Even with plenty of RAM, a memory leak from an application can cause performance issues. Monitor RAM usage in Task Manager and look for any unusual patterns.
- Factory Reset: As a last resort, if none of the above work, consider backing up your data and performing a factory reset on your laptop.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
