Omen 15-dc1877
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

My brand new HP Omen laptop 15-dc1877, with Windows 10 build
1903, will only have about 60% of normal USB speed unless I run a background
application that loads the processor hard. Then the USB works OK.
I  have downloaded and installed all the latest available drivers from HP.

@Anders9,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I reviewed your post and I understand you are getting slow USB speeds.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you download and install the BIOS and the chipset driver from the below link and check if it helps.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hi

All drivers including BIOS and chipset are updated to the latest version.

My brand new HP Omen 15-dc1877, i7 9750H, 16 GB RAM, with Windows 10 build 1903
will only have about 60% of normal USB speed unless running a background application
that loads the computer processor hard. Then it works OK. I know it sounds a bit
like up and down world but that's it. Another temporary solution is to choose to run
only 10 processors in ms config but it has other disadvantages.

I'm a radio amateur and the impact when running an SDR receiver is huge with distorted,
crackling sound and smeared spectrum as a result. In my case, I use an Airspy R0 SDR
radio that continuously streams a I/Q signal at 320 Mbit/s via USB2.

Minimum hardware requirements for Airspy from the manufacturer's website:
3rd gen Intel i3 2.4 GHz CPU or equivalent
2GB of RAM (to run your own OS, airspy barely needs 1MB of memory)
High speed USB 2.0 controller

I have been running the Airspy for several years with older, significantly lower
resource laptops than my new HP Omen with good results.

I have also tested the USB transfer rate with a fast USB flash memory stick and
measure the read speed at low and high load of the processor.
My measurements with SanDisk Ultra Fit 32 GB were about 139 MB/s with low load and
160 MB/s with high load (In both cases the average of ten measurements).

I've also tried another laptop with the same set of processor, memory and chipset.
It had exactly the same problem. If you wish I can send a link to a short video showing
the problem in reality.
