Does your laptop battery charge only when the laptop is turned off? Click here to view the solution

Hey everyone, Hoping to get some advice on a weird issue I'm facing with my gaming notebook. I've been trying to use the ULLU app for streaming, specifically the version from here:

The problem is, whenever I run a stream on it for more than a few minutes, my laptop's fans kick into high gear and the chassis gets noticeably hot. This seems strange for a video app, as I don't have this issue with YouTube or other services. It's almost acting like a demanding game. My System Details Model: HP Omen 16 OS: Windows 11 Home Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Laptop GPU Software: All drivers are up to date via HP Support Assistant. Troubleshooting Steps Taken Switched between Performance and Balanced mode in Omen Gaming Hub. Ensured no other intensive background processes were running. Checked power settings to ensure it is set for best performance. Lowered the video quality within the app, but the issue persists. Has anyone else experienced this with this particular app or have any ideas? I'm wondering if there's a specific setting for video playback or hardware acceleration I might need to adjust. It's frustrating because I want to use the app but not if it's going to cook my machine. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

HI @minamie56,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

That’s definitely unusual for a streaming app to push your fans and thermals like that, especially when other platforms like YouTube don’t. You’ve already done some solid troubleshooting, so let’s dig deeper.

Why This Might Be Happening

  • Hardware Acceleration Overload: Some apps use GPU-based decoding aggressively, which can spike GPU usage and heat.
  • Poor Optimization: If the app isn’t optimized for Windows or your GPU, it might be rendering in a way similar to gaming.
  • Background Processes: Certain streaming apps preload or cache content in ways that stress the system.

Steps to Try

  1. Check GPU Usage During Playback
    • Open Task Manager → Performance → GPU while streaming.
    • If GPU usage is high (30–50% or more), the app is likely using hardware acceleration inefficiently.

  2. Disable Hardware Acceleration in the App
    • Look for a setting in the ULLU app (or its web version) to disable hardware acceleration.
    • If not available, try running the stream in a browser and disable hardware acceleration in browser settings.

  3. Force Video Decode on CPU
    • In NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings, add the ULLU app and set Power Management Mode to Optimal Power.
    • This reduces unnecessary GPU load.

  4. Update NVIDIA Video Codec Drivers
    • Go to NVIDIA Driver Downloads and ensure the Video Codec SDK is up to date.

  5. Thermal Management
    • Use Omen Gaming Hub → System Vitals to monitor temps.
    • If temps exceed 85°C, consider a cooling pad or cleaning vents.

  6. Test in Browser
    • If the app has a web version, try streaming there. Chrome/Edge with hardware acceleration off often reduces GPU load.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
