@EliasL-git,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Thank you for your question! Updating the BIOS on your HP ProBook 430 G8 while running Debian 12 (or any Linux distro) is possible, though HP officially provides BIOS update tools for Windows. You have a few options:

Option 1: Use the BIOS Update from USB (Recommended):

HP provides BIOS update files that can be used via the built-in BIOS utility — no need for Windows.

Steps:

  1. Go to HP’s official sitehttps://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-probook-430-g8-notebook-pc/37973139.

  2. Under the BIOS section, download the latest BIOS .exe file — it will look something like SPxxxxxx.exe.

  3. On your Debian system, use Wine to extract the contents:

    wine SPxxxxxx.exe

Look for a file named like *.bin or *.sig — these are the BIOS update files.

  4. Copy the BIOS files to a FAT32-formatted USB drive (you can also use HP_TOOLS partition if one exists).

  5. Reboot the laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS setup.

  6. In BIOS, go to:

Firmware Management → BIOS UpdateUpdate from USB
  7. Select the update file and follow the prompts.

Option 2: Temporarily Use Windows (if USB update fails):

  • If the USB method doesn't work, temporarily install Windows on a small partition or run it from a bootable USB.

  • Then run the SPxxxxxx.exe as intended by HP.

A Few Notes:

  • Always make sure the laptop is plugged in and battery is charged to at least 50% before updating BIOS.

  • Avoid interrupting the update — a failed BIOS flash can brick the system.

  • If you're dual-booting, you can run the BIOS update in Windows, then return to Debian afterward.

Kind Regards,
