pavilion gaming 15-ak195ur
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Is it possible on my laptop (pavilion gaming 15-ak195ur) to update ssd, was ADATA IM2S3138E-128GM-B (128gb), and I want to put the Samsung 970 evo (250gb). I tried to update the driver and BIOS and Intel rapid and tried to download the data storage driver from the HP website. Please tell me if you can do it (if yes then how) and if the system is compatible with SSD Samsung 970 evo.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

I see you need help in upgrading the SSD, on HP Pavilion Gaming Notebook - 15-ak195ur. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you.

After reading your post, I did go through the Product specifications of your product and found that you have 2 TB 5400 rpm SATA hard drive installed on the PC.

Next thing, I would suggest here is to go through the Maintenance and Service guide of your HP notebook, and found that your PC supports M.2 SATA-3 (NGFF)

NOTE: HP does not recommend upgrading or downgrading hardware parts or software that is bundled with the product as It may affect the manufacturer's warranty and performance, however, you could change the configuration at your own discretion.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

i dont know about your laptop. you will need to go thru you manual. you can find it online. my laptop is different than yours. it had one notch in the port which meant it was compatible with the 970 or a two notch 2280 drive. a two notch port will not take a one notch 970. but a one notch port will take both one and two notch 2280 ssds. check your manual and look at your port. these nvme drives dont work in all m.2 ports. its alot of research. however this is what i posted in another thread that is old and locked. this is how i got the 970 working after I confirmed it was compatible with my m.2 port. the process may not be the exact same for you. im on an omen an012dx which is alot different config than yours. for some reason the 970 was compitable and we could not find it bios to install windows on it so this is what we had to do on our an012dx omens to make the 970 work.

from the old locked post: ( ive made a few edits for lack of context)

"I made a USB recovery drive using the Microsoft tool built into windows 10. 16gb USB drive is a must. It will take a long time to make. I did Not use the hp recovery usb. others said it would not work for some reason. maybe its not checking the m.2 port. Doesnt matter. The ms recovery USB drive will save the current config of drivers and it will be just like using the hp one. All your hp preinstalled and omen command center will be there when you install on the 970 evo.  Save all your important data to an external drive. This will be like starting fresh. Once you get the evo open the laptop and unplug the battery and the hard drive. You must unplug the harddrive. Then install the 970 evo. Buy an m.2 screw. You have to screw it down. make sure you have a thermal pad as well for it. Once the 970 is in plug the battery back up and plug your laptop in. You have to use the ms recovery USB drive to install win 10 on the 970 evo before you can plug your hard drive back in. Remember to unplug the charger and battery before you go to put the harddrive back in. And be patient. The hard drive is a pain to plug back in. The cable has to slide into the door on the mother board. The door will slightly close when you do it right. You will know when you got it right and the then you can close the door on the cable. Plug your battery back in and put the screws back into bottom plate. I suggest reformatting the hard drive. Leaving the old install can cause problems with the new one you have on the evo. Prepare for a blazing fast computer. It was more than worth the pain of installing it."

If the 970 is compitable in your machine I hope this info helps. to be honest tho it will not be much faster than the adata drive you have now. you will have more space but i belive it is only a few seconds difference in speed. make sure you can use it before you get it. and be careful to not buy an oem drive from newegg or amazon. the oem drives are not covered by samsung warranty and they may lock up if you have to do a refresh or recovery later down the road. they are cheaper and can be used but just be carful.

if you ever send your laptop into hp to be serviced or repaired take out any 3rd party parts. you may not get them back if you send them in with laptop. send your laptop as it came from hp.
