I have a Victus 16 r0xxx, every game i try to play crashes/freezes if I select a display resolution other than  full screen 1080x1920p, this only happens if im using my dedicated GPU (I have a 4060), my drivers and Windows are up to date so i don't know what else i can do to fix the problem.

One thing i've noticed is that games work fine in windowed mode if i connect the laptop to an external screen

Hi @NotMe1702

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Your Victus 16 r0xxx with RTX 4060 may be experiencing resolution-related crashes due to display mode conflicts between the integrated and dedicated GPU, especially when using the internal screen. Games working fine in windowed mode on an external monitor suggests a GPU routing or scaling issue.

Here’s a focused and professional recovery path to help stabilize your gaming experience:

1. Force Dedicated GPU for All Games

Ensure games are routed through the RTX 4060 consistently.

  • Go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  • Under Graphics performance preference, add your game executables.
  • Set them to High performance (uses RTX 4060).
  • Restart your system and test again.

2. Disable Integrated GPU Temporarily

This forces all rendering through the RTX 4060 and can resolve resolution conflicts.

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand Display adapters.
  • Right-click Intel UHD Graphics (or similar) > Disable device.
  • Restart and launch your game in non-fullscreen mode.

If this resolves the issue, the conflict lies in GPU switching logic.

3. Adjust Scaling and DPI Settings

Windows scaling can interfere with non-native resolutions.

  • Right-click your game executable > Properties > Compatibility.
  • Click Change high DPI settings.
  • Check Override high DPI scaling behavior and set it to Application.
  • Apply and relaunch the game.

4. Update NVIDIA Control Panel Settings

Ensure display scaling is handled by the GPU.

  • Open NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Go to Display > Adjust desktop size and position.
  • Under Scaling, select:
    • No scaling
    • Perform scaling on: GPU
  • Apply changes and restart.

5. Reinstall NVIDIA Drivers Using Clean Install

Corrupted driver remnants can cause display mode instability.

Download the latest driver from:
NVIDIA RTX 4060 Drivers

During installation, choose Custom (Advanced) and check Perform a clean installation.

6. Test with External Display Only

If games work perfectly on an external monitor, the issue may be tied to the internal panel’s refresh rate or EDID profile.

  • Try setting your internal display to 60Hz in Display Settings.
  • If your panel supports higher refresh rates, test with lower refresh to isolate the trigger.

Let me know if you'd like help checking your EDID settings or configuring a custom resolution profile. These steps should help restore smooth gameplay across all display modes.
