After much procrastinating I finally bought this HP 15-CX0030NR laptop. I was looking for something under a $1000 that my nephews can use mostly for Fortnite when they visit.
I have had this laptop for two days now, probably 5 hours of use. The computer has randomly turned off 4 times now. The other thing I noticed from the first time I turned it on, is how much the fan runs. I have a Macbook Pro that I use and maybe because I am not used to a pc, this is a HP thing? Any advice? Should I take this back?

Hello @katers39
I can offer some possibilities...
Is it turning off completely or rebooting?
Are Windows updates completed?
Have you ran the HP Support Assistant and let it update any drivers yet?
If turning off completely, what were you doing at the time in did this, gaming or something less intensive?
If gaming, its possible its having heating issues. You could install a tool like HW Monitor or Core Temp to see the temperatures.
Its slightly possible for the OS to be corrupted even though its new. Sometimes on a brand new machine, doing a factory reset will clear it up. This wipes the C drive and reinstalls the operating system.

You could have a hardware issue. HPs have a Diagnostics tool that is pretty good at finding hardware issues.
Restart the laptop and rapidly tap the F2 key to access the tool. Run the extended test for everything. Be sure to leave the machine plugged into the AC power.
You have the option to also contact HP Support directly for a warranty issue. IF they find it necessary, they would have you send it to them for repairs.

Or you could just take the laptop back to the store you purchased from and ask for a refund or exchange it for another one.
Let me know if I can help further.

Thank you for your reply.
I got the laptop on Wednesday. I noiticed when doing the setting up proceedure that the fan ran a lot. After the set up, I downloaded Fortnite for my nephews. That is the only thing that the computer has been used for, and when the computer screen goes dark. I can still hear noises in the background, but no picture.
I didn't know about HP assist and some of the other things you mentioned. I am so used to my Macbook, that it is going to take some getting used to using something else.
I did end up taking the computer back and did an exchange. It won't arrive unti next week and in the meantime I am going to keep researching to see if I can find something better in the same price range.

Sounds good.
Ya, Windows will take some getting used to if you're a Mac user.
When you get the next laptop, you can go to All Settings > Update and Security> Windows Update and force Windows to hunt for updates. Do this over and over until it does not find anymore.
Then go to the HP Support Assistant and hunt for driver updates there. You can find it by simply typing Support in the Search bar down in the Taskbar, or navigate to it from the Start menu.
