I don't know what context you are referring to...did you read this somewhere, or did someone tell you that...

Some folks believe that if you install memory that is not exactly the same part number that HP installed, that it won't work, or it will cause issues such as BSOD's.

Non-HP memory would be known as 3rd party memory.

HP memory would be the memory listed in the service manual with the HP part number on it.

It is not made by HP itself but by a memory manufacturer such as Hynix, Micron or Samsung.

For example:

If HP installed a specific model Samsung memory chip in your notebook, and you installed a Crucial memory chip, it may cause issues.

Personally, I have never found that to be the case.

I always check to see what memory was compatible with my PC, I have added it to the memory that was in there, and it has usually been from a different manufacturer.

Some folks aren't as lucky, or they just bought memory without doing their homework.

I was told by HP Repair that is the reason I'm being charged. They said it is customer induced damage.  Even though I did not change anything in my computer. Everything is the same since it arrived from HP. I am hoping i might be able to get a refund.
