OMEN 17-cb0720ng
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Here it says that the OMEN 17-cb-series can only support 32GB of RAM (2x 16 GB kit): product link: https://support.hp.com/hk-en/document/c06487457#AbT0.

I do strongly doubt that, as the Intel 370 chip set and Windows can do more. - The similar MSI series (GE75 9SG-429 Raider, for instance) can hold 64 GB and uses the same DDR4-2666-Dual-Channel RAM modules, the Intel HM370 chip set (and the GeForce RTX 2060-2080 series, just like the OMEN 17-cn's).

Micron's consumer memory web shop Crucial supplies the following info for a smaller OMEN 17 version: https://www.crucial.de/deu/de/upgrade-kompatibel-mit/HP-Compaq/hp-omen-17-cb0002ng: 64GB max.

(CT2K32G4SFD8266 - http://www.crucial.de/deu/de/hp-omen-17-cb0002ng/CT16263037).

There, the specs can also be seen, which seem to coincide with my OMEN.

Has anybody tried yet this so far?

Hi:

I can't say for sure, but here is what I have researched and found the same results.

The crucial memory report produces no data for your model.

However, if you enter the base model series in the crucial website (17-cb0000), you get a few models.

I searched two.  One I could not find any specs on, but this one...17-cb0000nl, shows it supports 64 GB of memory according to the crucial report.

https://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for/HP-Compaq/hp-omen-17-cb0000nl

It has the same processor as yours, so the assumption would be that yours can also take 64 GB of memory too.

HP specs on both models...

17-cb0000nl:

Crucial is almost always correct in specifying the max memory possible.

In conclusion, installing 64 GB of memory could have promising results.

Hi Paul,

thanks for the awesome and fast reply.

I heeded your advice and called HP Tech support to confront them with the findings. Alas, they do not get the information which board is really built into the laptops. (Incredible for me, having worked in the industry, too.) He did confirm, though, as you said, that the series usually uses the same mother board. 🙂

The HP - Compaq HP OMEN 17-cb0002ng which has almost the same hardware as mine and is on crucial.com DOES have the exact same main board - and can use up to 64 GB. Therefore, the chances are excellent that 64 GB will work on my machine, too. - As you found out.

(I pointed out to them that in comparison to the MSI GE 75 Raider series, which does have almost exactly the same specs, they undersell the OMEN 17's upgrading capabilities, therefore. - It also took quite some time to find out that, at least hardware wise, Raid 0 with the (two!) M.2 slots is also possible on the OMEN's; I think they sell it as 17-cb0020ng, if I remember correctly. Hopefully, they will upgrade their specs in the HP shop soon.)

Thanks again.

You're very welcome.

You will probably find out that the motherboards for the model series also use the same BIOS versions as well.

If Crucial is right, then 64 GB should work just fine.

HP sometimes understates the max memory capacity in their manuals for some reason.

The only reason I can think of is they don't test every possibility.

For example:  If you look at the service manuals for most of the notebooks with the Intel 8th gen core processors, HP says the max memory is 2 x 8 GB, but in almost every one of them, you can install 2 x 16 GB with no problem and Crucial reports the 32 GB max for most of these models too.

I have a Del OptiPlex 7020 desktop PC and I knew the Intel series 8 chipset and 4th gen processors can support 32 GB of memory.

The Dell specs stated 16 GB was the max.  Crucial said 32 GB was the max.

I went with the hardware technical specs/capability, and bought 4 x 8 GB of memory, and the PC runs just fine with 32 GB of memory.

Wow, I'm really glad you all posted this information.  I'm finding the same for my particular version of HP OMEN 15.  It brings up the same Crucial sticks as your model brings up.  (which presently reports as Out-of-stock, but that's okay as I'm not ready for it yet anyway)
