Victus by HP 16.1-inch Gaming Laptop
After the initial landing screen, the laptop display goes to a gray/black screen and nothing else happens. When connected via HDMI to a projector, the display works normally, and I can see everything. However, the built-in laptop screen will not change from the gray/black screen.

@duskwhisper, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue
It sounds like your Victus by HP 16.1-inch Gaming Laptop is experiencing an issue where the built-in display is not functioning properly, while an external display works fine. Here are the steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Check Display Settings:
- Connect your laptop to the external projector via HDMI so you can view the settings.
- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Under Multiple displays, make sure that Duplicate these displays or Extend these displays is selected appropriately.
- Ensure the laptop’s primary display is set correctly.
Update Graphics Drivers:
- Go to Device Manager on your laptop.
- Expand the Display adapters section.
- Right-click your graphics driver and select Update driver.
- Follow the prompts to search for updated drivers automatically online.
Toggle Display Output:
- Use the Function key (Fn) along with the appropriate F key (like F4, F8 or F5) that toggles display outputs on your HP laptop. This can switch between built-in screen, external screen, and both.
Adjust Power Settings:
- Navigate to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does and ensure the settings under Power button and lid settings are not affecting display behavior.
Perform a Hard Reset:
- Turn off the laptop.
- Disconnect all external devices and hold down the power button for about 15 seconds.
- Connect the charger and power on the laptop to see if the issue persists.
Check for External Damage:
- Inspect the laptop screen for any visible damage or disconnection issues that could physically affect the display.
BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Restart the laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup by pressing the appropriate key (often F10, F2, Esc, or Delete) during boot-up.
- Check if the display works within BIOS; if it does not, this might indicate a hardware issue.
I hope this helps.
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day.
