My laptop was working perfectly fine 2 days ago, i had a system update and now it wont charge or boot via battery. I have tried unplugging the battery and using the charger by itself. Nothing happened, i have just bought a new recommended replacement charger and that doesnt work either.

Hi @S7evo

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry you’re facing this—especially after the system update when everything was working fine just a couple of days ago. I appreciate the effort you’ve already put in by testing with the battery removed and even trying a brand‑new recommended charger.

Let’s go step by step to narrow this down:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the charger and remove the battery (if it’s removable).
  2. Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  3. Reconnect only the charger (leave the battery out for now).
  4. Try powering on the laptop.

Step 2: Check Charger and Port

  • Ensure the charging port is free of dust or debris. A gentle inspection with a flashlight can help.
  • Confirm the charger LED (if present) lights up when connected.
  • Try a different wall outlet to rule out power source issues.

Step 3: Inspect Battery and AC Adapter Status

  1. If the laptop powers on with the charger, reinsert the battery and check if it charges.
  2. If it still doesn’t, open Device Manager (Windows + X > Device Manager).
  3. Expand Batteries and right‑click both “Microsoft AC Adapter” and “Microsoft ACPI‑Compliant Control Method Battery.”
  4. Choose Uninstall device for each, then restart the laptop. Windows will reinstall them automatically.

Step 4: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

HP provides a built‑in tool to test the battery and AC adapter.

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Press the power button and immediately tap Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu opens.
  3. Press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  4. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery.
  5. Run both the Battery and AC Adapter tests.

Step 5: BIOS Update

Sometimes after a Windows update, the BIOS needs refreshing to align with power management.

  1. Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads.
  2. Enter your laptop model.
  3. Download and install the latest BIOS update available.
  4. Restart and test charging again.

Step 6: Windows Power Reset

  1. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
  2. Under Battery usage, check if the battery is detected.
  3. If not, this points to a deeper hardware communication issue.

By following these steps, we’ll be able to determine whether the issue is with the battery, charger, or system firmware. The diagnostics tool is especially helpful because it gives a clear pass/fail result for the battery and adapter.
