Hi @cosmin18,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The sudden drop in CPU usage after gaming for 30-40 minutes could be caused by a variety of factors, not necessarily a virus. Here are a few possibilities and suggestions to help you troubleshoot.

Thermal Throttling:

  • While you mentioned that the CPU temperature is between 70-80°C, which is generally within a safe range, some laptops may still throttle if they detect sustained high temperatures to protect the hardware.
  • Solution: Ensure your laptop's cooling system is working properly. You might want to clean out any dust from the vents or consider using a cooling pad.

Power Settings:

  • Your laptop's power plan might be configured to reduce CPU performance after a certain period of heavy usage to conserve energy or prevent overheating.
  • Solution: Check your power settings. In the Control Panel, go to Power Options and make sure you're on a "High Performance" plan. You can also adjust advanced settings to ensure the CPU is running at full capacity under load.

Background Processes:

  • Other applications or background processes might be interfering with your game and causing the CPU usage to drop.
  • Solution: Open the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) during gameplay and monitor CPU usage. Identify any processes that are consuming a lot of resources and consider closing unnecessary ones.

Driver Issues:

  • Outdated or incompatible drivers, especially for your CPU or GPU, can cause performance drops.
  • Solution: Update all your drivers, particularly those related to the CPU, GPU, and chipset. You can do this through the Device Manager or by visiting the HP website.

Software Conflicts or Bugs:

  • Sometimes, software conflicts or bugs in the game or operating system can cause sudden drops in performance.
  • Solution: Make sure your game and operating system are up to date with the latest patches. If the issue persists, you might want to try reinstalling the game.

Potential Malware or Virus:

  • Although it's less likely, a virus or malware could be causing unexpected behavior in your system.
  • Solution: Run a full system scan using a reputable antivirus program. Consider using Malwarebytes to check for any hidden threats.

Reinstalling Windows:

  • If all else fails and you suspect software corruption, reinstalling Windows can help reset everything to default settings and resolve any underlying issues.
  • Solution: Before reinstalling, back up your important files. You can perform a clean install of Windows or use the "Reset this PC" feature in Windows 10/11.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
