OMEN 16.1 inch Gaming Laptop PC 16-ae0000 (9J127AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have configured with 2 monitor running through hp docking station, lid closed.

Everything works except I cannot see boot or shutdown error messages,

For example the OMEN boot message only shows up if you have lid open and is display on laptop screen.

When laptop crashes or is stuck on reboot, there might be message but it will only be visible if lid is open and laptop display active.

With lid closed, how do you display boot / critical messages that right now only go to laptop display which of course is not visible with lid closed ?

The OMEN boot message is best example to verify it is working; want to see that on external primary monitor.

@frankf95d, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Display Boot/Shutdown Messages on External Monitor with Lid Closed!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To ensure that the boot and shutdown messages are displayed on your external monitors when the lid of your HP Omen gaming laptop is closed, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Configure Display Settings:

  • Ensure your external monitors are set as primary displays.
  • Open Display Settings and configure external monitors as primary.
  • Use the key combination Windows + P to toggle through display modes and select "Second screen only".

BIOS Settings Adjustment:

  • Enter BIOS setup to check if the option to display boot messages on an external monitor is available.
  • Restart your laptop and repeatedly press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS settings.
  • Navigate through the BIOS settings to find any options related to display output and set it to external monitor if available.

Graphics Driver Update:

  • Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date.
  • Visit HP support website or use HP Support Assistant to download and install the latest drivers for your graphics card.

Docking Station Firmware Update:

  • Update your HP docking station firmware to the latest version.
  • Visit the HP support website, enter your docking station model, and download the latest firmware.

External Monitor Configuration:

  • Test with different connection ports (HDMI, DP) on the docking station.
  • Check that the external monitors are powered on and configured correctly.
  • Adjust the input source on the external monitors to the correct port (e.g., HDMI1, DP).

Lid Close Switch Adjustment:

  • The lid close switch (Hall-effect sensor) could be faulty.
  • Ensure lid close switch is functioning correctly by testing it with a minimal setup (one external monitor connected directly to the laptop, bypassing the docking station).

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
