i have HP OMEN MAX 16 the cpu temperature was just fine and then i left for 2-3 weeks and then i returned to play the the cpu temp now reaches up to 96C

You can use elevation, fps cap or disabling turbo boost (this can reduce fps depending on game) to reduce temp. If laptop is already one year older then it can be time for cleaning and repasting. Methods like Elevating laptop, fps cap, disabling turbo boost can work great here and you can repaste and clean in future when ready
