My laptop no longer recognizes its own built in camera.
I used it last June, I do not know what update or software is not working.
I have tried the things people have suggested on different message boards
and done the troubleshooting.
After I identify my laptop on this site using its detection process, it finds the laptop,
and then when I click to add it to my profile or go to that products page, it says
error 404. As if the site thinks this laptop doesn't exist. When I try to enter my
serial number, i have triple checked it - it says "enter a valid serial number".

Please provide the Product ID or exact model name for better assistance. Preferably the full product ID including the characters after the # symbol as shown here. Possibly I might be able to find the proper webcam drivers and not have to guess.
some advice
HP is removing cloud recovery for system over 5 years old.
The actual wording is a limited time after the warranty expires
You may want to get a copy of the cloud recovery before it is too late.
Cloud recovery provides all the custom HP drivers.
Go to the below site and enter your product ID including the 3 characters after the # character
If you have cloud recovery you can restore your system using a 32gb flash.
It may take an hour or more to create the recovery USB.

Alternately, download from the MS windows store

00342-20876-84053-AAOEM is the product ID according to windows,
but on the laptop itself it is
68Y11UA#ABA
i do not wish to return my laptop to a previous version as i will lose a lot of things, unless i am misunderstanding how the process works - and even if it keeps everything on the computer i would imagine a lot of things would not work. is it possible the camera or the cameras connection was damaged somehow? not sure if i mentioned earlier but before the chatbot told me to uninstall it and then check for hardware changes, the camera was found in device manager under hidden devices but it said it was not connected. now it is nowhere to be found on any menu and i have done the HP diagnostics and all of that. One of which launched into what seemed like an HP bios type menu with weird resolution and did a diagnostics which took 90 minutes at least.

Did the diagnostics test the web cam? Did the camera work during the UEFI diagnostics?
| HP releases newer UEFI diagnostics periodically. When you select F2 during boot you are requesting UEFI diagnostics. There is an updated diagnostics package Click Here Look for the phrase 'issues outside the OS', Click the DOWNLOAD button. The version of the UEFI diagnostics is shown at the left of that DOWNLOAD button. When you press F2 to run diagnostics please ensure the version is the new one. |
I looked here and did not see any camera drivers which, IMHO, is unfortunately typical for camera drivers.
The below is my list of HP camera drivers. Possibly none will work
HP Camera Drivers Feb 2018, Notebook 800 G3 |
If you can re-find that hidden camera device, then this site can be used to lookup the vendor ID and device ID. Most camera are based on USB buss even the built in ones.
======more advice probably overshareing=====
Your laptop may have a True Vision 5mp camera with a privacy door covering the lens. Make sure it is open.
Try this HP universal webcam driver dated 2024
If it does not work then try a different driver as follows
Click Browse the computer to select a specific USB Video Device driver.
Double-click Imaging Devices to expand the list of webcam drivers, right-click the webcam driver, and then select Properties. It may not be under imaging device
Make a note of the existing name of the webcam driver (Example: HP Webcam), as it might change after the update.
On the Webcam Properties window, select Update Driver
Select 'Browse my computer for drivers'
Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.
Remove the selection from Show compatible hardware.
Select Microsoft in the Manufacturer field, and select USB Video Device in the Model field.
Click Next to install the webcam driver.
Allow the installation of the USB Video Device, and then click Close.
After the device has been updated to USB Video Device in Device
You may have to try more than one driver. Possibly an older driver will work.
If the above does not work then please provide the VEN and PID numbers that identify the camera device. For example the IR camera ID is 0408 and 545E
The actual camera is also needed, not just the IR
