Welcome to the HP Community --

Two common causes of the notebook not  closing:

  • Hinge assembly is mis-aligned or failing
  • Battery is swollen - if true, the battery will fail if it has not already done so.

The ONLY solution for a swollen battery is to remove and replace the battery.

If the computer is in Warranty,  contact HP Support and submit a Warranty repair request.

If the computer is not in Warranty, check the battery - replace if needed.

If the hinge assembly is failing, you can hope that HP Support will fix, contact a local repair shop, or consider replacing the assembly yourself.

Reminders - READ

Case submission to HP Support is available to those whose devices registered and are still in Warranty.

Some regions display phone / chat contact information only after the case is submitted online

Not every issue is covered under the standard Hardware Warranty.  Purchased Care Pack Warranties differ by contract.

HP is not a "general" repair facility: Requests for out-of-warranty repairs are usually not accepted.

If the problem is hardware, if your device is in Warranty, if your device is Registered, and you cannot submit your case to Support, let us know and we will forward a request.

Important

HP Phone numbers you find on the Internet have likely been hijacked. Old HP phone numbers – for example, those numbers no longer used by HP since the move to “online” case submissions – might have been taken over by thieves.

Do not be a victim.

Stay vigilant.

"Fat" Battery / Bloated Battery / Swollen Battery – Sealed / Internal Battery

All batteries die, some do so quietly and some first inflate and then fail.

Swollen battery might be hiding OR there might be evidence that the battery has inflated. For example, notebook case warps or won’t close, touch-pad stops working, “odd” bulging near the keyboard.

If the battery is in a swollen or bloated condition, the battery must be removed from the computer and replaced. There are no other remedies, tests, or useful options.
