Can you take a screenshot  of the settings --> Display window and the Syetem -->About --Device specifications window?

Use Windows snipping tool.  To access it just type snippping in the search box and click on the Snipping tool icon that appears above.

Save each image as  JPEG and use the Photos icon in the post creation window to path to each image and put it in your next post.

Are you certain that your Dad did not replace the notebook with a less expensive model?

The reason I ask that is that the connectors on each LCD display type is different.  some have 30 pins and higher resolutions LCD displays have 40 or more pins. One thing that cannot be changed is the connector on the notebook's systemboard. It will only allow the display type that belongs to the systemboard configuration to be plugged in.

Was it replaced under warranty by an HP Service Center or an HP authorized repair facility ?

Is it still in warranty? Use the link below to check your notebook's warranty validity.

Try the following.

Click the Windows icon. Click the Settings icon.

Select System and then Display. In the Display settings check the Resolution tab.

You should see a recommended (native) resolution that you can click on.

Click apply.
