why my OMEN by HP 16 Laptop PC with MD Ryzen 9 5900HX with Radeon Graphics is not working with Radeon Graphics

Hi @hdykm

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

If your OMEN by HP 16 Laptop PC with AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX isn’t utilizing Radeon Graphics as expected, it may be due to driver conflicts, power settings, or graphics switching behavior.

It’s understandably disappointing when a high-performance system doesn’t deliver the graphics experience you expect. Your laptop is equipped with powerful Radeon RX 6600M discrete graphics, and with the right setup, it should perform smoothly across demanding applications.

Steps to Restore Radeon Graphics Functionality

1. Confirm Graphics Switching Behavior

  • Your laptop uses dynamic switchable graphics between integrated Radeon and discrete RX 6600M.
  • Open AMD Radeon Software from the Start menu.
  • Go to Settings > Graphics > Advanced and ensure Switchable Graphics is enabled.
  • Assign high-performance mode to your preferred apps under Graphics > Switchable Graphics > Installed Profile Applications.

2. Update Graphics Drivers

These updates ensure proper communication between the CPU, GPU, and Windows.

3. Disable Windows Automatic Driver Updates (Temporarily)

  • Sometimes Windows Update installs generic AMD drivers that override optimized versions.
  • Open Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Hardware > Device Installation Settings
  • Select No (your device might not work as expected) and apply.

4. Check Device Manager

  • Press Windows + X, select Device Manager.
  • Expand Display Adapters and confirm both:
    • AMD Radeon Graphics (integrated)
    • AMD Radeon RX 6600M (dedicated)
  • If one is missing or shows a warning, right-click and choose Update Driver > Browse my computer > Let me pick and select the correct driver manually.

5. Adjust Power Settings

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Select High Performance or AMD Ryzen Balanced.
  • Avoid battery saver modes, which may force integrated graphics.

6. Run HP Diagnostics

  • Restart and press Esc, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the Graphics Test to verify GPU functionality.

If the Radeon RX 6600M still isn’t activating during games or apps, try launching a known GPU-intensive application and monitor usage via Task Manager > Performance > GPU. Let me know what you observe—I’ll guide you further if needed. You’re doing everything right by staying proactive and detail-oriented.
