I get monthly requests to connect to the Internet so HP can check ink levels and usage for payment. Does this mean that my printer should be left on when I am not using it [I'm loathe to do this as I use it relatively infrequently]. My printer is connected wirelessly and whenever I check connection is enabled and good.

That is correct for Instant Ink.  It requires an always on connection.  However if you connect at least twice a month, it should be fine.
