Hello!

I have 15,6" HP Pavilion Gaming i5-9300H 1660Ti Max-Q and tried to play Star Citizen recently. Temperatures in HWinfo were constant 85*C on CPU and 75*C on GPU. Everything was fine, no complains. In the past few days thought are 95-99*C on CPU, 75*C on GPU. I did nothing in the meantime, no major Windows updates, no game updates. Sometimes it also happens in other scenarios (rendering for ex.). One time fans were not at max speed the whole time on load(!), hence 99*C and thermal throttling.

Another thing is that fans are turning to full speed only if 99*C are reached, not earlier. When on full load, CPU clock is between 3,2GHZ-3,4GHZ, why so low? Tried to undervolt it, but achieved 3,55GHZ only on load (Prime95 & Furmark).

I also have Lenovo Legion with i5-9300H, on full load stable 4GHZ and 74-75*C with no problem, fans are turning to full at 70*C so I NEVER saw more than 80*C.

Newest bios, newest windows, drivers up to date. What the heck, then?

I have a few troubleshooting steps we could try to fix the issue:  
use the following steps:  (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

  • Shut down the computer, and then inspect and clean the exterior vents to remove dust buildup by blowing air through the vent openings. Dust can accumulate inside the vent openings and around internal cooling components, preventing the removal of heat.

  • After you remove the dust, turn on the computer. If the error message persists, continue with these steps.
  • Perform a hard reset. Performing a hard reset can reset recorded thermal values in memory and enable you to use the computer again, even if only for a short time to access and save any important files before service.

  • In some cases, updating the BIOS might help prevent this error from occurring.
