HP OfficeJet Pro 9014 All-in-One Printer

Well, first of all this isn't about Instant Ink, but I was unable to change that option, so kudos to the quality of the webpage

Secondly, I have an European 9014 printer that I took with me to Brazil. The yellow cartridge needed to be replaced so I went into the HP Brazil website and ordered whatever was offered under my model. It arrived in 2 days, as promised.

It didn't work though, as it claims that it is incompatible and that I need to replace it, but it's brand new!

Reading the web I found out that HP printers are region locked, like DVDs were in the past, before Netflix/etc. Don't people learn from history?

Interestingly, HP US seems to honor the cartridge warranty and unlocks the printer/cartridge combination. HP Brazil takes a difference stance, only doing it for printers within warranty. This will force me to toss out both the printer and a nice set of spare cartridges. Is there any way to avoid such a waste of printer and cartridges?
