Have an hp envy photo 7855. Cartridge error for black ink. Have followed steps provided and firmware up to date. No printing issues before today. Based on previous comments it sounds like a hardware issue, so since my printer is out of warranty is there any solution but to trash this and get a new printer?

To better assist you - Have you tried installing a replacement ink?
If the replacement ink works, it is an issue with the ink cartridge and I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the ink replacement.
