I bought a used printer from someone, and was very excited when it connected to my network. Then I received an error saying "this printer is already on someone's else's cloud account, so you can't register it to your instant ink account." (Paraphrasing). I have no way of contacting the person I bought it from as they have since moved. So now I own a printer I cannot even enroll in Instant Ink.

Hi @CL214,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It’s frustrating to face issues with a used printer, especially when you can't enroll it in your own Instant Ink account due to it being registered to someone else’s cloud account. Here’s a detailed approach to resolve this issue:
1. Remove Printer from Previous Account
If the printer is still registered to the previous owner's account, you need to disassociate it from that account. Unfortunately, you can't directly contact the previous owner, but you can try the following steps:
Factory Reset the Printer:
- Access the Menu: On the printer's control panel, look for the setup or settings menu.
- Find Factory Reset: Navigate to the Factory Reset or Restore Defaults option. This should remove all settings, including the previous account association.
- Confirm Reset: Follow the prompts to confirm and execute the factory reset.
Remove Printer from HP Connected Account:
- Access HP Connected: Visit the HP Connected website or use the HP Smart app.
- Sign In: Log in with your HP account credentials.
- Remove Printer: If the printer is listed in your account, remove it from your account. If it’s not listed, proceed to the next steps.
2. Reconnect the Printer
After resetting the printer, try setting it up again:
Reconnect to Network:
- Follow Setup Instructions: Use the printer’s control panel to reconnect it to your Wi-Fi network. Refer to the printer's manual for specific instructions on connecting to Wi-Fi.
Add Printer to HP Smart:
- Open HP Smart: Open the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.
- Add Printer: Click Add Printer and follow the prompts to add the printer to your account.
3. Enroll in Instant Ink
Once the printer is successfully added to your HP Smart account, you can enroll it in Instant Ink:
- Visit Instant Ink Enrollment Page:
- Go to HP Instant Ink: Visit HP Instant Ink.
- Sign In: Log in with your HP account credentials.
- Enroll Printer: Follow the instructions to enroll your printer in the Instant Ink program.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
