I think there may be a significant number of people who are seasonal in their usage -- heavy during some months, little or no printing in others. Consider Florida snowbirds, for example. Surely, HP has enough in-house creativity to figure this out in a way that makes sense for the company and its customers. I like the instant ink idea but can't see why I should pay for the service for the six months each year I won't use it. How about the ability to have the program for two printers each used half the year in different locations? There is a market for this, HP!

Instant Ink service is flexible for this reason. You may upgrade or downgrade the plan as you like depending on the requirement.
Also, if you are away from the printer for few months, you have an option to pause/cancel the enrollment for the time being and re-activate it when required.
