Can I replace the color cartridge before getting a message to do so?

HP Recommended
Example: HP Officejet 5746
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP Officejet 5746, enrolled in instant ink program. Color not printing properly, mostly yellow. However,  I have not received a prompt to replace the cartridge. If I replace it now, will HP still be able to detect when it’s time to replace and send me a new one?

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,

 

As you've mentioned in your post that you're having issues printing in color. I would recommend you try to print the print quality diagnostic page from the printer. 

 

For more details, you may refer to this support document for - Black or Color Ink Not Printing, Other Print Quality Issues

 

If you have followed the steps suggested and still having the issue then you can install the replacement ink cartrdiges and it will be able to check the ink levels and ship out the next set of ink cartridges when low. 

 

As these are to do with the Instant ink cartridges, I would need to know few details regarding your instant ink account to help you get the ink cartridges sorted.
