macOS 12.0 Monterey

I have two HP printers that use the same 910 cartridges. One printer uses instant ink, the other one does not.

By mistake, I put the wrong cartridge in my printer and now it is “classified” as an “instant ink” cartridge. This is a cartridge that I purchased myself.

Now the purchased cartridge won’t work in my second (non instant ink) printer

How can I resolve this issue?

How can I “reset” the ink cartridge?

@ElginApples, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to use the store-bought ink cartridge.

The Instant Ink cartridge cannot be used in a printer that is not enrolled in Instant Ink.

However, you can use a regular ink cartridge in a printer that is enrolled in Instant Ink and a printer that is not enrolled in Instant Ink too.

Make sure you have inserted a regular ink cartridge in the non-Instant Ink printer. It should work fine.

Check the label on the ink cartridge.

Check if the ink cartridges are properly inserted in the printer, you may refer to - Replace HP inkjet printer cartridges

Kindly perform the steps mentioned in this document - Ink cartridge error

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for your help.
I did not realize that the cartridge was labelled for the printer that is registered for "instant ink." So I swapped the cartridges around. Now the instant ink cartridge is inside the instant ink-registered printer, and the regular, store-bought cartridge is inside the regular, non-instant ink printer.

Now the the regular printer does not recognize the store-bought cartridge and won't print.

**The error message says: "Cartridge can only be used in printer that initially installed it."

How can I get the printer to accept and use this cartridge? Please advise?

Your printer with the Instant Ink account has "Cartridge protection" enabled.  Any cartridges installed will be marked as "protected" and can only be used in that printer.

Cartridge protection can be turned on or off from the printer's embedded web server.  Find the IP address of the printer and enter that in your web browser, then go to Settings, Cartridge protection, click on Disable HP Cartridge Protection, Apply.

Be aware, turning off cartridge protection only makes the printer not mark a cartridge as protected.  Turning off cartridge protection will not allow cartridges that have already been marked as protected in a different printer to be used.

In your case, the cartridge is now protected and cannot be used in a printer other than the one it was originally installed in.  Unfortunately, it is not possible to reset the cartridge protection once the cartridge has been marked.  To avoid a repeat of this issue in the future you will likley want to turn off cartridge protection for both the printers.
