HP ENVY Inspire 7955e All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I used to be able to connect my printer to my schools wifi, but now they have changed the settings to more security & encryption, which makes it impossible to connect to a wifi-connection.

I then tired to use the direct wifi option from my computer, but it doesn't work because I have instantink cartridges, and yes I am enrolled in a plan...but that requires internet.

These seems like a problem that HP should fix as this creates a cycle....can't connect to an internet router - so I can't print - can't use the instantink plan, because I can't connect to the internet....and I can't connect using wifi direct because I have an instant ink account, which needs the internet.

Very frustrating! And this has taken me hours to trouble shoot.  I'm literally at the point where I want to throw this thing in the garbage

Can someone confirm....if I cancel my instant ink - will I then be able to print using Wifi-direct?  I'll have to purchase my own cartridges yes?

Anyone else know of any work around?  With the instankink cartridges, every time I try to wifi direct, it says connection error:need to connect to a network....blah blah blah.  And their virtual assistance is useless.  Can't get a human to respond at all.

Hi @hello352,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with the HP ENVY Inspire 7955e printer, Instant Ink, and the new Wi-Fi settings at your school. Here's a breakdown of the issue and potential solutions:

  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: The school's Wi-Fi has been updated to more secure settings, which is preventing your printer from connecting.
  • Instant Ink: Because you're enrolled in the Instant Ink program, the printer needs to be connected to the internet to authenticate and communicate with HP’s servers.
  • Wi-Fi Direct: When trying to use Wi-Fi Direct (a way to connect the printer directly to your computer without a router), the Instant Ink enrollment prevents the printer from working in this mode, likely due to the internet requirement.

Canceling Instant Ink:

  • If you cancel the Instant Ink plan, the printer should no longer require an internet connection to function. This would allow you to print via Wi-Fi Direct without the need for an internet connection or an Instant Ink subscription. You would need to use regular HP cartridges, which you can purchase at any time.
  • Effect of Cancelling: Once you cancel the plan, you’ll need to buy standard ink cartridges, as Instant Ink cartridges are tied to the subscription.

Workaround without Cancelling Instant Ink:

  • Try a Different Network: If the school Wi-Fi is the issue, try connecting your printer to a different Wi-Fi network, like your personal hotspot or a home Wi-Fi network that doesn't have the same security restrictions. Once connected, you can print over that network.
  • Use HP Smart App: Make sure you're using the HP Smart app (available for macOS) to set up and troubleshoot the printer. It may help with reconnecting or resetting the printer.
  • Temporary Use of Wi-Fi Direct (without Instant Ink): If you temporarily cancel Instant Ink and purchase standard cartridges, you should be able to use Wi-Fi Direct for printing.

  • Reset Printer Settings: Try resetting the printer’s network settings to clear any old Wi-Fi settings. This can sometimes help with establishing a clean connection.
  • Check Router Settings: If possible, check if the school's new security settings can be adjusted to allow for your printer’s connection or if you can get a temporary connection for your printer using a guest network.

Canceling Instant Ink should allow you to print using Wi-Fi Direct without needing an internet connection. Alternatively, try other methods such as a different network, resetting your printer's settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
