I have had my printer for a few years and have been happily printing. However, two weeks ago I began getting the message that I had to be part of the HP Instant Ink plan to print. I do not want or need a plan. I install ink cartridges as needed. How can I circumvent HP forcing me to enroll in a program just to use a piece of equipment I have owned for over 2 years. Is it time to part ways with HP and buy a different printer and stay away from all HP products in the future?

Hi @Why-Why
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I understand how frustrating it must be to suddenly face restrictions on a printer you've been using for years.
HP Instant Ink cartridges are designed to work only when the printer is enrolled in the subscription service. If you've canceled your Instant Ink plan, those cartridges will no longer function, even if they still contain ink.
How to Use Your Printer Without HP Instant Ink
Replace Instant Ink Cartridges
- HP Instant Ink cartridges are locked to the subscription service.
- Purchase standard HP cartridges (not Instant Ink) from a store or online.
- Install them in your printer.
Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on.
Check for Firmware Updates
- Some HP printers may require a firmware update to recognize standard cartridges.
- Visit HP’s support page and download the latest firmware for your model.
Reset Printer Settings
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults.
- This may remove any Instant Ink-related restrictions.
If you are still enrolled in the HP Instant Ink subscription, let's go through some clear steps to resolve this issue.
Steps to Fix HP Instant Ink Enrollment Error
1. Verify Your Instant Ink Subscription Status
- Log in to your HP Instant Ink account here.
- Check if your printer is listed under your subscription and if the status is active.
- If your subscription is paused or inactive, try reactivating it.
2. Manually Sync Instant Ink Subscription
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
- Select Refresh Instant Ink (this forces a connection with HP’s servers).
- Restart the printer and check if it recognizes the subscription.
3. Update HP Web Services
- On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Web Services.
- If Web Services is off, turn it on.
- If it’s already on, disable and then re-enable it to force a reconnection.
4. Check for Firmware Updates
- Visit HP’s Instant Ink troubleshooting page here and download the latest firmware update for your printer.
- Install the update and restart the printer.
5. Reset the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
