I was planning to enroll in the free plan (15 pages/month) of instant ink. I know for a fact that I’m not planning on printing more than 15 pages, but I’m just wondering what would happen if I decide to cancel my subscription. Will I have to send back the ink cartridge?

Are there any hidden fees?

Would it ruin my computer?

I have an hp envy 7640.

Instant Ink is a Print-by-Page subscription.

Free plan, if you can even still get it, might be "worth it" if you only print occasionally and if you think the setup is worth the overhead that is required to be signed up for a subscription service.

Note that the Free Plan is being discontinued in some regions and is being shifted to a low-cost paid plan.  Contact Instant Ink support in your region to ask about whether the Free Plan is still available AND for any details on that plan and other plans.

Best you read how the service works, including the information in the Terms of Service document for your region.

Yes, I am recommending you read the contract.

Fees are not hidden but might surprise you if you do  not understand the plan.  For example, if you "go over" your plan page limit, you are charged for sets of extra pages as described in the contract.

You never own the Instant Ink cartridges.  Ink is supplied at no extra charge during the time the contract / subscription is active.  After the subscription is terminated by customer or by HP, the Instant Ink cartridges will stop working.  Instant Ink cartridges should be returned to HP.  See the contract for details.

The plan cannot ruin your computer.

The plan does not ruin your printer.

The plan requires that the printer be connected to the Internet for monitoring purposes.  WHAT you print is NOT monitored, the amount of printing is counted.  Each "page" is any sheet of paper on which anything is printed.  Test pages from Diagnostics are not counted.

People who generally save money and benefit from the service are generally those who print a lot, print regularly, and like the benefit of being sent ink when it is needed.  There is a certain "cozy feeling" about being able to ask for help when things are not working, too.  Instant Ink support is available by phone and here in the Community.
