Microsoft Windows 11

My black Ink is empty despite it being shown as 70% full. I have not had a cartridge sent out to me since 2022 so surely I am due some new ones? I also have done multiple deep cleans but I cannot print in black.

Product name Envy 5000

Hi @SteveWright,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to deal with a problem like this. If your black ink is showing as 70% full but you're unable to print in black, there could be a few reasons for this issue.

  • Ink Cartridge Issue: Sometimes, even if the ink level is reported as high, the cartridge could still be faulty or dried out. This might be why you're experiencing issues despite the reported ink level.
  • Ink Cartridge Expiry: Ink cartridges can degrade over time, especially if they haven't been used or replaced for a while. The cartridge might need replacement despite the ink level showing as full.
  • Printer Settings: Ensure that your printer settings are correctly configured to use black ink. Sometimes, settings might inadvertently switch to use color ink for black-and-white prints.
  • Printer Software: Check if there are any updates for your printer's software or drivers. Sometimes, outdated software can cause printing issues.
  • Cartridge Replacement: Since you haven’t had a cartridge sent out since 2022, you might be overdue for a new one. Even if the ink level shows 70%, replacing the cartridge might resolve the issue.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Replace the Black Ink Cartridge: Try installing a new black ink cartridge to see if that resolves the issue.
  • Check for Software Updates: Ensure your printer’s software and drivers are up to date.
  • Perform Printer Maintenance: Run any maintenance or diagnostic tools available in your printer’s software to address any potential issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
