I just installed new never used hp printer cartridges in my office jet pro 6978 and the printer is telling me that my 702 xl cartridges will not work in my printer. They are what I have always used. Print is telling me the cartridges are for older series of printers- like what?!?

Hi @nKhosi,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue where your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer is not recognizing the newly installed 702 XL cartridges, despite them being the type you have always used. This can be frustrating, but there are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:

Check Cartridge Compatibility: First, ensure that the 702 XL cartridges are indeed compatible with your OfficeJet Pro 6978. While you mentioned these are what you've always used, it's good to double-check in case there have been any changes or if there was a mistake with the cartridge packaging.

Reset the Printer: Sometimes, simply resetting your printer can resolve recognition issues. To do this, turn the printer off, unplug it from the power source for about a minute, and then plug it back in and turn it on. This can help reset the printer's internal memory and potentially recognize the cartridges.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts: Dirt, dust, or ink residue on the cartridge contacts or the printer's cartridge slot contacts can prevent proper recognition. Carefully clean the contacts with a soft, lint-free cloth and try installing the cartridges again.

Update Printer Firmware: HP regularly releases firmware updates for their printers. These updates can resolve compatibility issues with cartridges. Check HP's official website for any available updates for your printer model.

Region Settings: Ensure that both your printer and the cartridges are meant for the same region. HP printers and cartridges are often region-locked, and using a cartridge from a different region than the printer can result in compatibility issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
