I receive ink cartridges from HP but my Envy printer now will not accept the black one.

HP Recommended

macOS 10.15 Catalina

The ink comes directly from HP. The printer works with the color cartridge only  but this is a pain!  Until now, this hasn't been a problem. Should I go to Office Depot and get a new cartridge? A new printer? I've tried updating firmware but that doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions would be appreciated!
